Home - News - Daily - Five Iranian Shorts at the 25th Palm Springs Shortfest

Birthday Night (2017) by Omid Shams, Ceremony Night (2018) by Behnam Abedi, Umbra by Saeed Jafarian (2017), The Role (2018) by Farnoosh Samadi and Dissect (2018) by Siavash Shahabi are the five shorts from Iran that are part of the official selection at the 25th Palm Springs International Shortfest 2019.

 

Palm Springs Shortfest which is held from June 18th – 24th 2019 in Palm Springs is one of the biggest short film festivals in North America. This Academy Award Qualifying and BAFTA Qualifying festival has been running for 25 years and has over 4,200 submissions each year.

 

Omid Shams began his filmmaking education n at the Iranian Youth Cinema Society and moved onto making his first and latest short, Birthday Night as part of the Iranian National School of Cinema. Birthday Night follows Ahmad and Ali who are friends and co-workers. One their way home one night which happens to also be their birthday, an accident arises which leads them to find out things about each other they never knew.

 

Behnam Abedi graduated with a Graphic Design degree from Sooreh University in 2010. Ceremony Night is Behnam’s second short film. His first short, Whales (2016) was selected at the Slamdance Film Festival. Ceremony Night is about a funfair worker who decides to break his silence about the death of his co-worker who fell down from the Ferris wheel an hour before the opening time.

 

Siavash Shahabi, editor and filmmaker, has made five other shorts prior to Dissect. The synopsis of Dissect reads ‘as the police arrive to investigate the sudden death of a boy in his classroom, a teacher must reckon with his reputation in the eyes of his students and colleagues.’

 

This is amongst many of Saeed Jafarian’s selections as Umbra was in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this year.  The film tells a story of a young woman who goes after her missing partner after having made love in the darkness of the midnight.

 

And lastly, The Role is Farnoosh Samadi’s third short film. Her previous shorts were selected by Cannes Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, AFI fest and many more. The Role which has already been part of the official selection at Tirana International Film Festival is about a woman who accompanies her husband to an audition.
