19th Odense International Film Festival (OFF19) is an Academy Award qualifying, week long short film festival which made its debut in 1975, making it the oldest film festival in Denmark. Magralen by Maryam Zarei and Pedovore by Mohammad Kart are the two representatives of Iranian shorts at the festival. The films were selected from a total of 3264 films that were submitted at this year’s festival.

Magralen, Maryam Zarei’s first short film, follows Nima who turns the gloomy scrapyard into a formula 1 race track. His younger sister Tara listens to him, captivated. Tara is blind. While their parents quarrel, Nima creates a colourful, happy world in which Tara can grow up without worry. Nima playfully maintains his version of reality, confronting tragedy with hope.

Zarei studied Theatre Directing at the Sooreh University and holds an MFA in Theatre Practice at the University of Alberta, Canada. She has been working as a director since 2008, initially in radio dramas, and since then she’s had many successes at national and international festivals.

Pedovore by Mohammad Kart explores the power of a child’s love. The synopsis reads “Nobody takes the feeling of love in children seriously, but in the world that is like a pedovore monster nothing is more beautiful and powerful than a child’s love.”

Kart initially started his career as an actor in 2000 and since then he has made a number of short films and documentaries.

OFF19 will run from August 26th to September 1st, 2019 in Odense, Denmark.
